5 Essential Tips for a Neurodiverse-Friendly Holiday Season

It's officially the holiday season...

We're fully into the season of dinners, parties, family gatherings, and busy busy stores. Let's talk 5 tips for making this time of year a little more you-friendly:

🌟 Find Your Sanctuary The sparkle and cheer of the holidays often come with a buzz that can be overwhelming. Remember, carving out a quiet space for yourself is perfectly fine. Whether it’s a cozy corner with your favorite book or a serene spot away from the noise, let this be your personal retreat to recharge (this includes hiding in the spare bathroom for a few minutes at the next big family dinner).

🙅🏻‍♀️ Set Your Boundaries If you’re not up for the umpteenth holiday shindig, it’s cool to say so. Whether that's politely declining some party invites, or pre-planning what time you're leaving, figure out what's going to feel best for you and let it be known. No guilt.

💛 Redefine Celebration Tradition doesn’t have to be conventional. Feel free to redefine what celebrating means to you. Maybe it’s a peaceful walk on a crisp morning, a movie marathon, or crafting. Whatever you choose, let it reflect what brings you genuine happiness and peace.

🌿 Take Care of Your Sensory Self Lights, sounds, and scents can be a lot during the holidays (not to mention extra busy stores), and they can be a lot to process. Plan ahead by wearing clothing that feels good on your skin, keeping noise-canceling headphones close by, or having sensory tools like fidget spinners at hand. These small preparations can make a big difference in your comfort levels.

👏🏼 A Toast to Your Triumphs: As the year wraps up, let's take a moment to appreciate how far you've come. Each of us has made incredible strides in embracing our unique paths, and that's worth celebrating.

If you need more ideas or a little encouragement along the way this season I'm also just a reply a way.

Stay awesome friend

So, you've heard me say, "Hey, maybe we should lower our expectations of ourselves a bit," and immediately thought, "Ah, so we're just giving up now? Cool, cool." Here’s the deal: lowering your expectations doesn’t mean you’re throwing in the towel. It’s not about giving up on growth; it’s about not being so hard on yourself. Think of it as upgrading your inner dialogue from a drill sergeant to a supportive coach. Self-acceptance is like realizing you're not a superhero—and that’s totally...

Resilience Everywhere I turn this week, the conversation has been about resilience. I love this conversation, and when I stopped to think about it, I don’t think you and I have ever chatted about it, certainly not recently. There’s this misconception that resilience is an inherent trait. Either you’re resilient, or you’re not. Truth is resilience is a skill you can learn. Anyone can become more resilient. But before we talk about that, let’s back up for a second. What does it mean to you to...

What Works For You? Hey friend! Someone recently asked me how I figured out what resets my nervous system. Such a great question! I talk about all sorts of tools and strategies for navigating life, self-care, and resetting our senses. But I don’t talk much about figuring out which ones work for you. The short answer is to test and retest. Try everything that piques your interest, and see how it works for you and makes you feel. If you liked it, try it again. If you didn’t like it, it didn’t...
